Service Learning
What is service learning? How is it different from volunteering?
Service Learning is providing the students with the opportunity to explore a problem within their community. Service Learning transcends a one day volunteer activity, in that each student must engage with the problem, do research, and actively explore solutions. Once the beginning research is done, the student then participates in action, followed by a time of reflection, which most often solidifies the Service Learning Experience.
Why is it important for students?
Service Learning projects allow students to go deeper into a communities needs. The layout of a Service Learning project forces students to internalize an issue and seek out meaningful ways to solve the issue. Furthermore the reflection piece of a Service Learning Project is proven to solidify both the facts learned in the research stage, and the emotional connection to the problem in the action stage. Students are changed through Service Learning projects.
How do you plan to implement service learning in your future classroom?
Students are more likely to internalize themes and concepts if they can make a connection to them in real life. Service Learning projects provide a resource for me as an educator to give students connections to their community and what they are learning. Specifically in English, service learning will solidify themes such as love, hate, hunger, desire, etc. within our own community. Furthermore the projects will allow students to showcase their connections between literature and their own communities problems.
